OC should protect laws, people’s interest: Davis

ESA’ALA MP Davis Steven says the Ombudsman Commission should act to protect the laws of the country and interests of the people.
Steven, the attorney-general until last week, said the decision to recall Parliament yesterday without notice, was in breach of the laws.
“We have just observed that Parliament has been recalled,” he said.
“As a result of the highly questionable decision of Speaker Job Pomat, only 42 members of Parliament attended the session today, most of whom were on the Government side of the house.
“Parliament purportedly debated and passed the Appropriation Bill, the national budget for 2021.
“In doing so, it is a clear indication of the abuse of process and the law.”
Steven said there was already a court challenge to test the actions of the Speaker in recalling Parliament.
He said another court challenge was going to challenge the legality of Marape (PM) and Ling-Stuckey’s (Treasurer) political shopping list.
“I will be interested to know if the first legislative council has endorsed the final bill before NEC approval was given,” he said.
“All laws must be certified by the State Solicitor. I doubt whether our Treasurer Ian Ling-Stuckey was aware of this requirement.”
