MORE cool weather is expected to come through this week, the National Weather Service (NWS) says.
“We should experience cold chills in the country due to very cold air that’s generating from the south of Australia,” NWS assistant director Jimmy Gomoga said.
He said the cold air was moving fast and could reach Papua New Guinea resulting in the country experiencing cool weather as predicted.
He said Port Moresby and Southern would see mostly fine weather throughout the week.
The NWS forecasted more rains to continue in West New Britain and the New Guinea Islands as well and parts of Mamose.
The Highlands is expected to experience cloudy weather and light showers.
“Strong winds will continue again this week and should ease by the weekend,” Gomoga said.
He said strong wind warnings had been issued for all coastal waters of the;

  • Southern PNG/Indonesian border through to the Torres Strait all the way to Milne Bay;
  • Cape Vogal to Finschhafen through Vitiaz Dampier Strait;
  • Siassi Islands to Long Island to Manus and its western group of islands; and,
  • New Britain through St George Channel to New Ireland and the ocean waters of the Bismarck and Solomon seas.

Gomoga said the ongoing strong winds would slow down at the end of the month with a change in wind direction lead into the wet season in November.
He said in the last few weeks, the polar blast with the weather system in Australia enhanced the intrusion of cold air into PNG.
