Officer calls for fairness in appointments

National

THE appointment of the acting police commissioner and his deputies is unfair though it is the prerogative of the National Executive Council, former acting commissioner and provincial police commander Giossi Labi says.
“The appointment should be done by a special committee headed by the state secretary and not a politician or anyone else and that also applies to the other two disciplined forces,” Labi said.
He said there was no balance in the appointments and all those who were appointed were from one region of the country.
“I am calling on the police minister to publicly apologise to Peter Guinness whose name was publicly announced for the position but unfortunately changes came up later to disqualify him from the position.”Labi said.
Guinness has reached the retirement age of 60.
According to Labi, past police commissioners and their deputies came from different regions which gave the positions some balance in terms of where they came from.
The current appointments are for only three months.
