A POLICE officer allegedly involved in the shooting to death of prison escapees William Kapris and Raphael Walimini is facing two counts of wilful murder.
Const Tony Kande, 42, of Imero village in Watabung, Eastern Highlands, on a K2,000 court bail, was read his charge by Waigani Committal Court Magistrate Tracy Ganaii.
The case will return to court on Aug 6.
Police alleged that on May 14, 2013, between 1pm and 2pm, convicted prisoners Kapris, Walimini, and Michael Warangu escaped from Bomana Prison.
Warangu was shot and killed the next day by police. Kapris and Walimini went into hiding in Kairuku, Central.
Kapris was picked up at Isu market in Central.
In their company were two women identified as Philomena Kalagus and Margaret Lapu.
On July 22, 2013, around 3pm, it was alleged that they were picked up in a vehicle with another person, Kevin Kom, and then travelled to Port Moresby.
They were allegedly intercepted by two unmarked police vehicles and killed in an exchange of gunfire at Gabadi along the Hiritano Highway in Central.
Police alleged that the two men were still alive when transported (in a separate vehicle) to Port Moresby.
Police allegedly paraded around the city with the two bodies before taking them to the Port Moresby General Hospital.
