A POLICE arresting officer has been summoned to appear before the Waigani Traffic Court next Tuesday and explain the status of a case where a mother and her daughter were victims of an incident at Manu Autoport in Port Moresby after being hit by a taxi. Magistrate Paul Nii summoned Snr Const Worin Tingkeo attached to the 4-Mile traffic police to appear before him and give a progress update on the case which was still pending trial. The defendant, Wilson Koya, 26, from Yombi village, Southern Highlands, appeared on a K500 bail on charges of driving without due care and attention, along with careless and negligent driving. However, the victims and Snr Const Tingkeo did not turn up. Magistrate Nii told Koya to pay an additional K500 for bail before the next hearing. Police Prosecutor Snr Sgt John Wamugl said the case was serious because it involved a mother and her child and the arresting officer was the only person in contact with them.
He then requested for a final adjournment. Magistrate Nii allowed a final adjournment before summoning Snr Const Tingkeo to appear next Tuesday. Police alleged that on Jan 23, at around 3.30pm, Koya was seen along the Manu Autoport roundabout and the Turua junction in Port Moresby. Police alleged that Koya entered the roundabout from Gavamani Road and hit a mother and her daughter who were crossing the road.  After realising what had happened, Koya panicked and accelerated but bumped into another vehicle coming out of Turua Street heading to the roundabout. He was then badly assaulted by the public and rushed to the Port Moresby General Hospital for treatment.
