A SENIOR police officer has urged Port Moresby residents to assist police in maintaining law and order during the festive season.
“We want to work with every organisation and individual that is concerned about lives,” Waigani police station commander Inspector Jerry Yawa said.
He told The National yesterday that he had visited a number of organisations and members seeking their assistance in kind or cash.
He said law and order should be everyone’s concern.
“We are just the custodian of the law in terms of enforcement,” Yawa said.
He added that police were not the only ones responsible for the protection of lives and properties in the capital city.
“We need assistance from all of you to carry out this fight against crime in Port Moresby city,” he said.
Yawa said this during a presentation by the PNG Ports Corporation of two computer sets, a printer and 10 fuel drums to Waigani police.
PNG Ports chief commercial officer Fego Kiniafa said the donation was to boost police operations within the city during the festive period.
“PNG Ports, as a corporate citizen, is obliged to assist where it can to enable the police to carry out their work effectively,” Kiniafa said.
He said they also planned to provide a boat to the water police to enable them carry out surveillance and maintain law and order in the Fairfax Harbour.
