Officers want condemned houses at Kwikila barracks rebuilt

THREE police duplexes consisting of six units at Kwikila Barracks were condemned and closed more than 10 years ago but officers are calling on authorities to rebuild them to accommodate police in Central.
Kwikila Police Station second in-charge Snr Sgt Aga Vele told The National that the houses were closed around 2007-08 when they were declared unfit for human habitation.
All the policemen were sent to other stations in Central.
Snr Sgt Vele said in 2016, officers from police headquarters visited the barracks to rebuild the houses but nothing was done.
He said the station had 23 policemen, officers and reservists.
Const Cindy Afuti said water was one of their major problems at the barracks.
“When we finish from work, we go down with our colleagues, look for creeks and fetch fresh water,” Const Afuti said.
“There is no running water and most of the people store water in tanks.”
Zone three commander Chief Supt Johannes Yapi said during his time as the provincial commander, he had spoken to the PNG Rotary Club. Rotarians had inspected and estimated costs to make renovations with one building to be used as a family sexual violence unit with spaces to keep victims.
