THE World Environment Day is a time to reflect on the shared responsibilities of individuals to safeguard the environment for future generations, an official says.
Climate Change and Development Authority acting managing director William Lakain said the day was observed to remember the importance of natural environment.
“Our natural environment provides, healthy ecosystems, clean water, purified air, maintain soil, regulate the climate among many other services,” he said.
“That is why the environment is the foundation of life on earth and in the sea.”
Lakain said in joining the world to commemorate the day under the theme “only one earth”, everyone must take pride of the environment that provided life and everything that was necessary for survival.
“Our actions in preserving our environment whether big or small like planting trees matters.”
Lakain told the schools and the partners who took part in observing the day that everyone had the power to save the earth in little activities that individuals did in preventing harm to the environment.
“You must learn about the environment as much as you can, because the knowledge you acquire will enable you to foster better relationship with the environment in the future,” he said.
Lakain said that to preserve the environment and protect the climate was entirely depended on collective effort from individuals.
“Let us continue to appreciate the value of our natural environment and use it sustainably for our benefit and for the benefit of our generations to come,” he said.
