MORE than 400 employees of the Ok Tedi Mining Ltd (OTML) opened national mining safety week with a walkathon in Tabubil yesterday.
This year’s event ends on Friday. It focuses on fitness and reducing fatigue.
OTML deputy chief executive Musje Werror has encouraged employees to fully participate in the week’s health and safety activities.
“The theme for this week – Fitness for Work – is very timely and I encourage everyone this week to fully participate in the programmes,” he said.
“It is an exciting event and there are also activities (that will be happening) at the mine, mill, Bige, Kiunga.
“Today is the start of the national mining safety week.
“We don’t want to see anyone getting injured, so please ensure safety comes first.”
Werror said that having a fit and fatigue-free workforce meant that OTML employees and contractors worked more productively and went home at the end of each shift without injury.
He thanked OTML’s occupational health and safety department for putting together the programme. Werror also thanked contractors for their displays and stalls.
The week’s activities will include daily health and safety discussions, displays by OTML departments and contractors, competitions, circuit classes, a trivia night and a visit by the PNG Pukpuk Sevens team.
