THE 36-year-old Wallam Primary School has yet to produce educated elites and public servants, head teacher Andrew Luke Kasin says.
“It is one of the oldest school in East Sepik’s Ambunti-Dreikikir and the standard of the school continues to remain stagnant since 1985,” he said.
Kasin said the reason for the lack in progress was because the school was in a very remote area where basic government amenities such as roads and healthcare centres continued to be lacking.
“Children in Wam local level government area do not feel like going to school because of the distance and the road conditions, potentially creating a generation of illiterate people,” he said.
“Even teachers refuse their postings to come and teach here.
“The rights of the people to access basic government services and to be educated have been deprived for years.
“This is a level 4 school and we only have grades one to six and for the students to continue their grade seven and eight, we send them to St Leo Aresili Primary School.”
Kasin said many students had dropped out after losing their desire to complete their education.
“The LLG consists of six council wards with a population of more than 4,000 people,” he said.
Ambunti-Dreikikier MP Johnson Wapunai said he would look into the matter and respond soon.
