ONE of the 11 high-risk prisoners who escaped from the Kerevat Jail in East New Britain (ENB) on Tuesday morning was recaptured the same day.
According to ENB police commander Snr Insp Joseph Tabali, the escapee, Jason Dominic, was recaptured at Rakesit village near Kerevat.
Insp Tabali told The National yesterday the prisoner was recaptured by the Kerevat Correctional Institute officers and police and was brought back to the jail and charged with escaping from the lawful custody.
The 24-year-old prisoner from Kabakap village, Kokopo, had been serving three and a half years for robbery.
Insp Tabali explained that the prisoners made their way out by digging under one of the jail’s wire fences and cutting through another at around 3am.
Insp Tabali said he was unsure how the prisoners got past the jail’s three main gates or how they were not spotted by the officers on duty that morning.
He said the 10 escapees still on the run were considered dangerous and a threat to the community and police would be doubling their efforts to recapture them.
Insp Tabali appealed to the public to assist by reporting any sightings of the escapees to their nearest police station.
He also warned relatives not to harbour the escapees.
The 10 prisoners who remain at large are: Max Paieti, 25, from Maselice in the Kandrian, West New Britain, serving a 12-month term for possession of live ammunition; Valvalu Lane, 36, from Balada in Bitapaka, Kokopo, ENB, serving six years, three months and three weeks for armed robbery; Henry Umue, 40, from Tagitagi in Toma-Vunadidir, Gazelle, ENB, serving 23 years and five months for rape and sexual penetration; Paul Warait, 19, from Ratavul in Kokopo, serving a two-year three-month term for assault; Vincent Pauria Tube, 28, from Tavui in Bitapaka, a remandee charged with wilful murder; Judas Samuel, 25, from Vunamami village, Kokopo, a remandee charged with attempted murder; Henry Penny, 20, from Pomio, a remandee charged with sexual penetration; Exon Pinia, 23, from Bitavavar, Kokopo, a remandee charged with attempted robbery; Taken Waninara, 28, from Vunamami, Kokopo, a remandee charged with sexual touching; Robin Ezekiel Western, 28, from Bitavavar, a remandee charged with wilful murder.
