PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill has extended condolences to the family of the late Dr Jacob Weiss, who passed away on Monday.
“I extend the sympathies and condolences of my family, and the Nation’s Government, to his family.”
He said over the past three decades, the late Dr Weiss maintained a high-level engagement with governments in PNG, and was an important source of sound economic advice.
“A renowned economist, he had the capacity to look beyond the bounds of conventional methods to identify solutions to problems and seek new economic opportunity.
“Economic advice from Dr Weiss was particularly invaluable in recent years when our country faced the sharp downturn in global commodity prices, a slowing economy in China and crippling drought in Papua New Guinea.”
O’Neill acknowledged the support of Dr Weiss and “his commitment to serving PNG, and working with our governments to develop the economy of our nation”.
Dr Weiss further represented the nation as the Honorary Consul General of Papua New Guinea to Israel, as well as an adviser to governments on seconded from the International Monetary Fund, and was a member on several important boards including Ok Tedi Mining Limited.
