O’Neill: MPs never denied

THE former government never stopped political leaders from having their say during budget discussions, former prime minister Peter O’Neill, pictured, says.
He was responding to a comment by Prime Minister James Marape, who claimed that he had no knowledge of budget frameworks, yet he was forced to support the budget. “We expect him (Marape) to support his Treasurer (Ian Ling-Stuckey).
“But to say that he did not play a role in framing eight budgets is simply not true.
“Our government has never stopped any minister or MP from having their say during budget discussions,” O’Neill said.
“The economy is in good shape, given the confidence expressed by many respected observers, including oversubscription of the recent sovereign bond issue by international investors.
“That is confidence in PNG but it is fast eroding because the Government is setting poor policy platforms.
“And investors are not interested in investing in PNG. “We are fast heading towards recession while rest of the global economy is experiencing moderate growth.
“It will take years to recover because the Government is not providing confidence to the nation and international investment community.

  • The Prime Minister James Marape totally needs to disband the PNC faction in his government to avoid them derailing the catch cry “take back PNG” slogan.Their ( PNC) party leader is at the crossroad finger pointing when he knew that he almost wrecked the nation on borrowing and put self and party interest ahead of the 8 million plus people. From his failures, should contribute tangible ideas how best the government can develop policies and deliver services to those that are yet to see light reaching them.

  • O’Neill is correct in saying there is no restriction or denial of MPs in budget discussions but can he also point out that he is the sole influence in all budget outcomes during his regime which is the reason PM Marape and others had to step down of their portfolios and cross the floor. Its no secret Mr O’Neill.
