Only two Morobe districts launch development plans

MEMYAMYA and Kabwum are the only two districts in Morobe that have crafted and launched their five-year development plans in line with the government’s Medium Term DevelopmentPlan III (MTD III).
Menyamya has its plan realigned with the provincial government’s aspirations in growing socio-economy- beginning with agricultural activities.
Local MP Thomas Pelika has started implementing some of the activities, including food security programmes as well as a hydro power project, in partnership with the National Agriculture Research Institute (Nari) and Lae-based Australian Consul General Paul Murphy.
Pelika said the theme of the plan was “transformation of human livelihoods in communities through responsible and sustainable socio-economic growth and development”.
He said the six main aims were to develop physical infrastructure to enhance sustainable economic activities, integral human development, good governance and management, establish service centres, partnership and networking to address cross-cutting issues.
National Planning and Monitoring officer Maria Wau said though the plan was in line with the government’s MTDP III, funding local level governments was a challenge.
“Though we write national development plans after capturing all provincial and district plans, funds are allocated based on the plans,” Wau said.
“More funding has been expended into implementing these plans to achieve positive outcomes by delivering basic services as written in the plans and yet where does this money go and we don’t see results.”
