EXPECT more police presence in Port Moresby streets and settlements after the launching of Operations City Blitz yesterday to target loitering, traffic offences, behaviour and cleanliness.
Chief of Operations and Deputy Police Commissioner Jim Andrews said the police operations were the lead-up to the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders Week starting Nov 18.
There will be foot patrols to ensure public safety.
“Making the city safe for students to walk to school and women to walk freely to where they want to go,” he said.
Involved in the operations are officers from the National Capital District public safety police which include the criminal investigation division, the dog unit and the NCD Task Force.
Police officers will also be visiting settlements to make people aware of issues that may cause crime and bad behaviour. They will also look at cleanliness and traffic issues, with particular attention to driver licencing, traffic laws and the removal of unroadworthy vehicles.
Andrews urged police officers to make sure the city was clean, quiet and safe when the world leaders arrived.
