THE seventh international orchid spectacular and this year’s art exhibition were officially launched at the Sir Rabbie Namaliu orchid garden and the National Parliament hall last Friday evening.
Governor-General Sir Paulias Matane, who officiated at the events, described both as nothing short of spectacular.
“Orchids are a special national asset to PNG of which there are more than 3,000 species found throughout the realms of our country.
“You can find orchids from the highlands to the lowlands and in nearly every different habitat and environment in PNG,” Sir Paulias said.
“The orchid show is a credit to the Orchid Society of Papua New Guinea and, especially, its president Justin Tkatchenko for showcasing and promoting our beautiful orchids all over Southeast Asia.”
Representatives from the Orchid Society of Southeast Asia were also in attendance.
“It is a great honour to have you attending our country’s orchid show,” the vice-regal told the visitors.
“I can see the orchids that you have brought with you to show in this event. They are outstanding and very special and are really a highlight for all to see at this year’s show,” Sir Paulias added.
He said that this year’s show was about promoting the world orchid conference to be held in Singapore next year, hosted by the Orchid Society of Southeast Asia.
“I am happy to hear that PNG will be competing at this prestigious event and we wish the orchid society
success at the world meet.”
PNG Orchid Society patron Sir Rabbie Namaliu also commended Tkatchenko and the team for their efforts in making the event possible.
“Every year, the event keeps getting better and, with the kind of commitment displayed by the PNG Orchid Society, we are bound to see and cater for bigger international orchid events in the years to come,” Sir Rabbie said.
Several awards were also given out to the best orchid growers nationwide.
The orchid show ended yesterday.
