THE national women’s rugby league team will host a selection tri-series on Saturday which will see train-on squad members divided between Team Red, Black and Gold.
The series will be held at the Santos National Football Stadium and will end on Sunday.
Orchids chairman Okaro Yogi said yesterday that selectors would use the series as trial matches to finalise their squad for a friendly match against Australia next month.
She said the final squad would be considered for the group to the Rugby League World Cup in England.
“I would like to thank National Rugby League Papua New Guinea manager Cathy Neap and Mark Mom for arranging these trials,” Yogi said.
“Thanks to PNG Rugby Football League chief executive Stanley Hondina and chairman Sandis Tsaka. These trials will help the Orchids prepare well for the World Cup.
“We are not going into the tournament to make up numbers, but we want to be a strong force and good preparations will help us achieve that. Unlike the previous years, I think we are more prepared this year.
“Orchids coach Ben Jeffries can’t attend the trials, but we will have team manager Cassie Davies present. In the lead-up to the trials, the girls had gym and indoor sessions to prepare mentally.
“The team from these trials will play Australia in August.
“We’ll then finalise the World Cup squad.”THE national women’s rugby league team will host a selection tri-series on Saturday which will see train-on squad members divided between Team Red, Black and Gold.
