THE 2019 Karimui Conservation, Agriculture and Cultural Show is part of efforts to declare Mt Karimui in Chimbu and the surrounding 160,000 hectares area a conservation zone, an official says.
The show is expected to attract tourists from around the world with six tourists already confirming their attendance.
Show coordinator Chris Jamie said this on Wednesday during the launching of the Karimui show logo and dates.
The launching was done jointly by the National Cultural Commission (NCC), PNG Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) and a conservation non-governmental organisation – Partners With Melanesians (PWM).
Jamie said the show was initiated last year to promote the huge agricultural potential and the rich culture and biodiversity through conservation and ecotourism initiatives to benefit the remote Karimui people.
“Last year, it was amazing and we had three days of show one each for conservation, agriculture and culture and we had around 160 different groups and performances,” he said.
“This year will be bigger and better and we are looking forward to receive around 20 international tourist from around the world who already showed their interest.”
Executive director for PWM Kenn Mondiai commended the sponsors for the inaugural show last year.
He presented the show report to sponsors PNG Ports Corporation, Digicel PNG, Chimbu government and Karimui.
The National Cultural Commission yesterday pledge a support of K5,000 towards this year’s show with other sponsors also reaffirming their support and sponsorship.
