MORE than 1000 school leavers and youths from Popondetta, Northern, arrived in Lae on their way to further their education at the Highlands Youth Training and Rehabilitation College (Hytarc) in Banz, Jiwaka.
Hytarc director Michael Goro and wife Anna were in Lae to welcome the 1040 students at the Ai Gris dinghy landing and arranged transport for travel to Banz.
Goro said the students from Sohe and Ijivitari were among the first enrolments along with those from Bougainville, East and West New Britain, Central and Mamose regions.
“Most students are self-sponsorsed but we believe that Northern Governor Gary Juffa and MPs Richard Masere (Ijivitari) and Henry Amuli (Sohe) will invest in these students as they are their human resources,” he said.
Hytarc offers certificate and diploma courses in accounting, business, office and human resource management, information technology, sales and marketing, tourism and hospitality, computing, government studies, certificate in childhood and modern public management.
It also offers certificate and diploma trade courses in heavy diesel equipment fitting, motor mechanic, electrical and auto electrical, carpentry and building construction, drafting building design, welding and metal fabrication.
“Hytarc was offering a second chance to school leavers and youths,” Goro said. “We’ve inspired and gave a new lease of life in the human mind with positive thoughts to many currently serving in government and private organisations since 2008.”
Waterais-Ramu oil palm landowner chairman Steven Muriab in Wankun village said that 70 school leavers in the area would also attend Hytarc under the Ramu Agri-Industries Ltd Asples scholarship scheme.
Rolland Una, a student, said Hytarc had opened a new chapter in Northern by providing educational opportunities for school leavers.
