Our identity under threat

Letters

I HAVE a concern over SIM card registration database.
It is a fantastic idea introduced in the PNG Government system just like any other developed nations.
However, many people within our country panic over the idea with their own beliefs and motives, based on cultural or religious grounds.
I am a Christian and I have found nothing wrong with it.
It is just a service to help business activities and has crime tracking advantages.
The only concern here is our confidential bio data given with our face photos.
Can the National Information and Communication Technology Authority (NICTA) secure our database from leaking out elsewhere under tight security?
Critics have repeatedly warned that the scheme puts personal information at risk.
Our phone numbers are linked with bank accounts.
This can easily end up in cybercrime and related threats by online thieves to customers.
Can NICTA team do more awareness by providing relevant reasons for registering SIM cards?
I also appeal to human rights lawyers to do something about SIM registration.
