LIHIR islanders and the police are concerned about outsiders causing trouble and disturbing the peace in the island community.
This was in relation to the arrest of four men charged with the robbery of more than K1,000 in goods and cash from a local store in Lihir last month.
Acting New Ireland police commander Insp Elizah Taksir said the four men hailed from outside Lihir. Anthony Justin, 20, is from Kinenuboku in East Sepik, Dominic Yal, 25, from Keram in Madang, Wille Vintata, 28, from Kawalakes in West New Britain and Willie Kumapas, 19, is from Vunamurmur in East New Britain.
They appeared before the Lihir district court last Friday.
Police reports said the four men had robbed Sunset Trading at Londolovit town on Jan 30 and took off with K1,180 cash plus goods totaling K493.20.
Community leaders want people coming to Lihir to work, especially those involved in the informal sector, to maintain the peaceful and harmonious atmosphere on the island.
Meanwhile, an expert team from the defence force was in Kavieng last Friday to get rid of an old wartime bomb at the Kavieng airport.
New Ireland also witnessed the opening of its legal year last Friday.
