THE University of PNG will receive an outstanding K4 million from the Tertiary Education Student Assistance Scheme (Tesas) this week, an official says.
UPNG had received all its operation funds for 2017, except for the K4.1 million, said Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Secretary Father Jan Czuba.
“They received all the money from government for operations and salary and Tesas as well. (But)
K4.1 million for the second semester (2017) they’ll get (this week,” he said. “Universities submit their budgets to National Planning which then go through the departments of Treasury and Finance. The budget is reviewed against the operations, and the Ministry of Higher Education gives Tesas.
“Tesas is given when the university submits acquittals and the number of students. The Government doesn’t have any outstanding payments to make.”
Czuba said UPNG received around K90 million for the two new buildings under construction “and the Government gives regularly for maintenance as well”.
Vice-Chancellor Vincent Malaibe said the university was owed K7.5 million by students in unpaid school fees.
