Over 80,000 can register in province

MORE than 80,000 people from Maprik in East Sepik can now register with the PNG Civil and Identity Registry following the signing of a memorandum between the registry and the district administration.
Acting Registrar-General Noel Mobiha said Maprik was the 18th district that the registry had visited to get people registered.
District Development Authority chief executive Joshua Himina had already initiated a social sector data collection, he said.
“What we want to see is the movement of data from the ward level all the way to the district level and then to the provincial and eventually to the national level,” Mobiha said.
Himina said people from Maprik and neighbouring districts should be able to register in town. He said data collection was essential to the growth of the district.
The district hopes to use some functional grants from the planning division in January 2020.
The memorandum states the district will provide a mobilisation plan to the registry with a capital expenditure budget of K150,000 to be used during the planning phase for a office set-up and establishments including the purchase of two new registrations kits. The registry team is using the Maprik District Development Authority office.
Registration started on Monday.
