THE Moni Plus Papua New Guinea Open Squash Championships are set to start today, says PNG Squash Rackets Federation president Eli Webb.
She said the federation was ready to host the three-day tournament at the Port Moresby Racquets Club.
Webb said the tournament would attract more than 60 squash players from Kokopo, Lae, Mount Hagen, Goroka, Port Moresby and Australia and
Webb said she was yet to receive confirmation on the participation of athletes from New Caledonia and New Zealand.
Webb said the tournament would be used to identify athletes to make the PNG squash team for next year’s Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa.
“What we would like to see is a variety of players showcasing their skills at the national level, so they can be recognised and selected to represent the country at international level. The last time this tournament was held was in 2011 in Lae,” Webb said.
Webb said she was looking forward to see players from across the country showcase their skills at the tournament.
She said members of the PNG squash team were expected to participate in the tournament. Madako Suari Jr and Lynette Vai will be looking to maintain their spots as the country’s No.1 men’s and women’s squash athletes.
The tournament will be contested in the men’s open, women’s open, B grade, C grade, masters and junior categories.
