TWO men in their 20s were charged in a committal court in Lae with murder on Friday.
Magistrate Pious Tapil read out the charge to Jerreyel Kipu, 28, and Gebob Thomas, 21, from Huon Gulf’s Busamang village, Morobe, and remanded them in Buimo Prison.
He said the charge was serious, so they had to apply for bail at the National Court.
“Wilful murder is a serious crime where this court does not have the powers to grant you bail,” he said.
Magistrate Tapil fixed May 5 for hearing.
On Feb 10, in Budu’s Busamang village, Kipu and Thomas were allegedly in the company of others and killed a 47-year-old man from the same village with alcoholic bottles.
The court was told that Kipu, Thomas and their accomplices were alleged to have been under the influence of alcohol when committing the alleged murder.
Police told the court that the deceased, after visiting his friends was trying to return home when he was allegedly attacked by Kipu, Thomas and their accomplices.
The deceased was hit several times on the head with rum and berry bottles. Kipu, Thomas and four accomplices, after allegedly hitting the deceased on the head, took K500 cash and other valuables and later dragged him into the Budu River.
A fisherman between 5pm and 6pm on Feb 11 found the deceased floating in the sea and dragged the body to shore and transported it to the Salamaua health centre and later to the Angau Hospital mortuary.
