Paramedics praised for response to accident

St JOHN Ambulance paramedics and technicians were praised for their swift response and assistance to 12 passengers of a motor vehicle incident at the Red Sea roundabout at Baruni, Port Moresby.
St John Ambulance dispatcher Godman Kimia received a 111 emergency call at 7pm on Tuesday and dispatched the first ambulance a minute later.
The ambulance arrived at the scene about 10 minutes later, followed by another four and staff.
Paramedics and technicians assessed, provided and managed critical medical care to the injured 12 before transporting them to Port Moresby General Hospital.
Police provided security and the Fire Service assisted St John Ambulance staff to rescue the trapped driver of the vehicle.
The wreckage was around him before he was treated and taken to hospital.
St John Ambulance commissioner Matt Cannon commended the efforts of the Fire Service and police for their quick response in securing the accident site. Cannon said their efforts made it possible for St John paramedics and emergency medical technicians to safely provide medical care and treatment to the injured.
Officer in-charge traffic Joseph Salle said the 25-seater bus collected passengers from Koki and was travelling to Porebada when the PMV ran off into a ditch along the road, injuring 14 passengers in all.
Salle said most of the accidents occurred when drivers did not concentrate or on high speed.
