Park take initiative to support conservation

THE Port Moresby Nature Park is doing its part to raise awareness on the protection of conservation areas in PNG, says general manager Michelle McGeorge.
McGeorge and United Nations Development Programme head of the environment Edward Vorkich officiated at the opening of the World Environment Day with a ground-breaking ceremony for a new tree kangaroo facility that would be built in the park to house the animals and at the same time raise awareness on protected areas in the country.
McGeorge said the new facility would be built to promote the work of conservation organisations and raise awareness on PNG’s protected areas.
She said last year the park became a recipient of a UNDP Gef (Global Environmental Finance) grant to enable the park to be a voice in promoting the work of the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (Cepa) and other related organisations.
She said the tree kangaroo facility would be the park’s main attraction to raise awareness on the need for better protection of the country’s rainforests.
