NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has commended Port Moresby residents for their support in making the telecast of live rugby league matches on the big screens around the city a success.
Parkop made these remarks when asked about tonight’s State of Origin match.
“It has been a great and safe event for the last 10 years so I am confident that it will be a safe and enjoyable event,” he said.
“Yes, sometimes someone or two people lose it a bit but most people are decent and peaceful.
“We have shown it in the 10 years of big screen shows.”
Meanwhile,NCD and Central police commander Donald Yamasombi has also remained positive that residents of Port Moresby and Central have matured with the coming of many positive changes in the community.
Yamasombi commended the residents for being responsible citizens, whom over the past five years had been good hosts for major events in the nation’s capital.
“I believe the residents of NCD and our people from Central have matured in us hosting many national and international events by conducting themselves well,” he told The National.
“I am sure our citizens and residents will enjoy the Sate of Origin series well in the comfort of their homes or wherever they may be watching the game as true supporters of their teams”, he said.
Yamasombi said rugby league had a huge following in PNG and by now most people in the country should already know how to appreciate the game.
“Rugby is a game loved by many Papua New Guineans,” he said.
“Just like watching our national teams play, people should watch the game in the true spirit of sportsmanship and not be driven by emotions.
“Together, we can make our capital city and Central a better place to live in.”
