NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has given K30,000 to support the early childhood development programme of the Christian Brethren Church (CBC) in Port Moresby.
The assistance was made public during the opening of the church’s new chapel at Morata’s Gado and Wilhelm Places last Saturday.
“This is a church we helped to build 10 years ago to provide spiritual services and support to our people in Morata. Now, I am back to open the new chapel they built on their own, without my support,” Parkop said.
He said this was proof that locals could achieve greater things without government support.
“The new church building, which has a sitting capacity of more than 500 heads, stands as a testament to what the people are capable of.”
Apart from the funds allocated towards the early childhood development programme, another K30,000 was donated by the CBC Southern regional office.
Giving a background to the church’s journey, Parkop recalled that they started building the church in 1992 when services were conducted under banana trees.
“But now, there stands a permanent structure worth more than K800,000.
“It was also a challenge to build a church among the community known for a high rate of crime and violence in the 1970s, eighties, and nineties.
“Today is a testament to the church for changing and bringing about a much safer and peaceful community.”
Parkop committed to sealing Morata’s street roads next year.
