Parkop says police not using CCTV

NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop is not aware that police are not using the closed-circuit television (CCTV) control centre in their work in Port Moresby.
Parkop said the surveillance system which covered most of the capital city cost K42 million to set up for the 2018 Apec (Asia Pacific Economic Corporation) security operations.
The Apec Secretariat had handed over the facility to City Hall which then passed it on to police in May.
Parkop handed over the CCTV control centre to Met Sup Perou N’dranou who received it on behalf of the police.
Parkop said that the long-range cameras could capture even petty crimes such as bag-snatching at roundabouts, markets and other hotspots.
He said the surveillance system had worked well for other cities around the world.
The surveillance system covers suburbs such as Erima, Gordon, Koki, Badili and Boroko. Acting Police Comm David Manning said they could not use the centre because the owners of the building (Oakley Haus) did not allow them in.
“Things changed under the new arrangement and we no longer have access to that building,” Manning said.
“It was an arrangement after the 2018 Apec. But that centre is not accessible. We are now working with the NCDC to relocate that centre.”
