THE National Parliament has passed a motion to allow Autonomous Bougainville Government president John Momis to present his report today on the preparation and progress of the Bougainville Referendum.
Parliament passed the motion in the afternoon session after the Leader of Government Business Rainbo Paita moved a motion to allow Momis to address the nation on the referendum.
Prime Minister James Marape made the call in the morning session.
“I will reciprocate in the ABG parliament on our assistance to the Bougainville referendum and life after the referendum,” he said.
Tewae-Siassi MP Kobby Bomareo had asked Marape on the progress of the referendum.
Marape said: “We are supporting the preparation so far. Bougainville Affairs Minister Sir Puka Temu is doing an excellent job despite limited funding.
“Next month we will go to Buka and Buin for the Joint Supervisory Meeting to check on the preparations.
“They (Bougainville Referendum Commission) have asked for an extension of another six weeks (from Oct 12) to give more time for Bougainvilleans in Bougainville and outside of the Autonomous Region to enrol.
“So we have given them the flexibility to allow for the extension (from Oct 17 to Nov 23).”
Marape said he expected Bougainville to be ready for the referendum.”
