PARLIAMENT is still waiting for funding from Government to restore the totem poles and masks that were removed, Deputy Speaker Jeffery Komal says.
Komal, in his response to questions by Nawaeb MP Kennedy Wenge on Wednesday, said Parliament had written letters to National Planning, Treasury and Finance to complete the documentation, construction of the totem poles and masks.
He said Theo Zurenouc as the speaker of the ninth parliament in his application of his vision of restoration, reformation and modernisation of Parliament House in 2013 resulted in the removal of masks and caused considerable damage to the totem poles in the grand hall.
“After lengthy court proceedings the national court declared on May 30, 2016 that the removal of masks and damage to the totem pole was unlawful and infringed upon section 45 of the constitution the National Cultural Property Preservations Act of 1995,” Komal said.
He said preliminary preparations had started.
