THE signing of an implementing partner agreement by National Planning and Monitoring with the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) will better address employment, health and education issues in the country, a senior public servant says.
National Planning and Monitoring deputy secretary Michael Kumung said this holistic approach, marked a significant step toward advancing Papua New Guinea’s development agenda.
UNFPA has been actively engaged in various programmes, with a focus on family planning, maternal healthcare and sexual education.
“By formalising this agreement, Papua New Guinea demonstrates its commitment to supporting development initiatives.
“The collaboration with UNFPA is valued, and both parties eagerly anticipate working together to address critical issues,” Kumung said.
UNFPA’s representative, Saira Shameem, emphasised on the importance of the 2024-28 country programme, which aimed to enhance the well-being of the population.
Key areas of focus included investing in young people, promoting the progress of women and girls, and eliminating harmful social norms.
Shameem said UNFPA’s efforts were also extended to data collection.
