THE Madang government is working with its councillors to spread information and awareness on the Covid-19.
On Friday, its team visited Bundi local level government (LLG) in Usino-Bundi and distributed 500 brochures and banners which cost K177,850 to the 22 councillors in the area.
Dr Juith Gawi from the Modilon General Hospital, who was part of the team, urged the Bundi people to take the Covid-19 preventive measures seriously.
According to a spokesperson from the provincial government, the team covered Madang and Rai Coast districts in distributing the awareness materials.
It was understood that the total printing costs of the brochures and banners was about K1.5 million for awareness alone.
Acting Madang administrator Joseph Bonomane said ward councillors were given K2,000 each as their allowances to carry on the awareness.
Madang Governor Peter Yama, who called from Madang town and aired through the PA system, told the people of Bundi that the money given to the ward councillors was part of the K10,000 allocated to each of the 451 ward councillors in Madang prior to the Covid-19 outbreak.
“We feel that the Covid-19 came in the right time for our ward councillors to use their allocated funds to serve their people,” he said.
“It’s not the SOE (state of emergency) money, its provincial government money passed by the provincial assembly in the 2020 budget for ward councillors,” he said.
Yama said he would consider increasing the amount to K15,000.
