The real investment starts with libraries and young children, Pacific Institute of Leadership and Governance (PILAG) acting director Robert Nemala says.
Speaking during the launch of the PILAG children’s library in Port Moresby yesterday, Nemala said there was a need to educate Papua New Guineans in their early years through reading.
“The important challenge for us is to educate the nation.
“If we are able to educate the nation, we change the way things are happening in this country and it starts with small children,” he said.
Nemala said children always honoured what their teachers said and teaching them to value books and appreciate learning would set a strong foundation for positive messages.
He said positively impacting children at school, especially through reading books and the love for knowledge, would have a positive outcome in the future.
The opening of the children’s corner in the PILAG library was a collaboration between PILAG and Buk Bilong Pikinini (BBP), which was supported by the PNG-Australia partnership to provide children and their families access to books and engaging in activities with the aim of increasing literacy rates and fostering a love of reading and learning.
The two organisations have partnered to give local children and their families access to the new facilities and learning opportunities available at the new PILAG Library, which includes BBP’s early childhood literacy programme for pre-school children.
