BAGS of fresh produce all the way from East New Britain reached Port Moresby on Saturday to be sold to retailers and customers.
This was made possible through a partnership between the East New Britain market authority and National Capital District Commission (NCDC) markets division.
NCDC market manager Charlie Pengi said fresh produce were needed for a healthy population.
“They produce vitamins, minerals, fibre and nutrients important for a healthy diet,” he said.
“It helps to reduce the risks of cancer and other diseases.”
ENB business development manager Nano Keake was happy to see the 40 bags of fresh produce sold out in less than an hour.
“It tells me that there is high demand for fresh produce here in the city,” said Keake. The ENB market authority is an initiative of the ENB provincial government to reach markets around the country.
“Our supplies will be consistent and will be bigger and better as we go along,” Keake said.
“We will make it easier where there will be control measures in place so that we help our local farmers sell their produce.
“We have the responsibility to help our people find their market not only in our town but in other provinces like here in NCD and overseas.”
Keake also called on the Government to assist with the transportation from the garden to the markets.
“The fees for transportation are high which most of the farmers can’t afford,” he said.
