THE Transport Department and Kumul Consolidated Holdings Limited (KCHL) are looking into developing the country’s first railway system, says Prime Minister James Marape.
Marape said that they were looking into setting up a railway to service Morobe as it was the industrial hub of the country.
The proposed railway system will begin in Lae then into Markham, Ramu and all the way to the East Sepik plains and Vanimo.
“Markham, Ramu and all the way to the Sepik plains is a huge agricultural area that we are trying to open,” he said. He said it was because of the agricultural prospects in the area that prompted them to look into a railway system.
“We already have the Transport Department and KCHL looking into that,” he said.
He said the system could benefit from the existing public-private partnership policies.
The Government is open to private investors coming in to sponsor the project.
Morobe Governor Luther Wenge said that the provincial government was willing to support the project.
