Papua New Guinea Union Mission of Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) president Pastor Malachai Yani has clarified that Pastor Ted Wilson’s visit to Lae, Morobe has been postponed due to medical reasons.
Yani said: “He is 74-years-old with his wife and the church cannot continue to use him every day, it is not healthy for them.’’
He said the union mission decided to cut some of Pastor Wilson’s trips in the country and Morobe was one of those affected.
He said the pastor and his wife were not doing well and in order for them to recover, they were not allowed to travel and pay visits.
Pastor Yani said another reason was that Pastor Wilson was doing administrative work by preaching in the evenings so bringing him around PNG would affect his global obligation to respond to administrative duties.
He said they were aware that the Morobe people and provincial government were geared up and were ready to receive Pastor Wilson.
He said unfortunately Pastor Wilson could not be forced to go to Lae because he’s a global leader and if anything happened, the union mission would be held responsible.
Yani apologised to the people of Morobe and other parts of PNG yet to be visited by Pastor Wilson.
Meanwhile, Yani also clarified that the total number of people baptised during Monday’s evangelistic meeting was not correct.
He said the union mission was still collecting data throughout the 2000 plus sites in the country.
Yani said during the pre-campaign conducted between 2021 and 2023, the church had baptised 53, 000 persons, excluding data not collected from rural sites.
Yani acknowledged the country’s responsiveness to the SDA church running their 2000 plus evangelistic sites and the presence of other churches and the public who were attending the campaign.
“This indicates that the people in our country are very responsive to the gospel, which is something that I as a church leader for the country appreciates,” he said.
