PEACE is essential in every part of society in order for the country to progress, says Housing Minister and Moresby North-East MP John Kaupa.
He said this in his World Peace Day message on Friday.
Kaupa said addressed a small crowd that gathered to celebrate and observe World Peace Day organised by the Watt Kiddie Peace and Gutpela Sindaun Foundation at 3-Mile in Port Moresby.
He said in order for the country to progress there must be peace coming from the heart of every citizen.
“Therefore, when we talk about peace, we must have peace within our hearts,” Kaupa said.
“That starts with us, then within the family units, then within our neighbourhood, our communities and our country as a whole.
“We need peace to live a happy life based on respect, love and caring.
“Peace is Godly and it is based on Christianity and democracy.
“Papua New Guineans should maintain peace at all times with each other.” He said that his district observed peace when celebrating the country’s Independence anniversary.
“In my electorate of Moresby North-East, we want community peace so we have shown that over the three days of Independence,” Kaupa said.
“We are moving further by reinforcing peace through the settlement upgrading programme.
“We want people to live peacefully by building their own homes when they have land titles. We want to discourage tribalism and regionalism.”
Watt Kiddie Peace and Gutpela Sindaun Foundation founder Watt Kiddie said that after 43 years of nationhood, PNG still needed peace.
He said tribalism, regionalism and local terrorism still existed in the country.
Kiddie said every Papua New Guinean should put peace first in everything they did and allow the values of peace to drive their lives each day.
“These values are fairness, equality, unselfishness, acceptance of defeat, truth, obedience to law, respect, caring, humility, apologetic,” he said.
“Therefore PNG needs peace.”
