Peanuts making ends meet for Highlander who lost his job

If you stop by the traffic lights near the Pineapple Building, in Port Moresby, you’re bound to see Jackson Wano with a handful of peanuts.
For Wano, originally from Aiyura, Eastern Highlands, peanuts have become a living since he left home to start again in the big city.
Wano was a student at Goroka Technical College in 2016 but left because of family issues.
He moved to Port Moresby and found work at the RH Hypermart, at Gordon, as a shop assistant. When he lost that job, he turned to selling peanuts on the street to make ends meet.
“Selling peanuts helps me make money to cover printing costs for my job applications and money to buy food,” he said.
He buys peanuts from Boroko Market, roasts them over a fire by the roadside and sells them at traffic lights near Sir Manasupe Haus, formerly known as Pineapple Building.
The lights at the traffic stop turns red for up to two minutes, long enough for Wano to get in close to people in cars and buses to sell peanuts.
It’s a supermarket of sorts, with other people selling things like cold fizzy drinks, gadgets, music players and mobile phone adaptors for motor vehicles.
