People in WNB urged to provide info on escapees

West New Britain provincial police commander John Midi has appealed to communities to provide information on the 30 prison escapees of Lakiemata Jail who are still at large.
The 30 were among the 43 who escaped from Lakiemata on Oct 28.
Of these, three were shot and killed, two have voluntarily surrendered to police and eight had been recaptured.
Midi said recapture of the escapees heavily depended on the support of people in surrounding communities.
He said there has been some success in recapturing escapees with limited resources, especially in terms of information.
Midi said the community could help by “giving us the information to recapture all the escapees”.
“The little help and information we have received has helped, but people in the community must come forward and report anything suspicious at their surroundings,” he said.
Midi said prisoners seemed to “walk out freely many times” from Lakiemata in the past and now.
“It is almost like a routine thing for people to walk out from Lakiamata, from past reports. Midi said police were working 24/7 and any information regarding the escapees should be passed on to them.”
