People trained to be activists

Thirty-three people in Hanuabada were certified as community activists after attending a four-day training. The training was conducted by the Population Services International following community activist recruitment workshops held last year.
PSI is a non-governmental organisation that has programmes that target gender-based violence (GBV). It is their pilot project to work closely with urban communities by involving them in their programmes to advocate against GBV.
The community activists are community members who volunteered to make Hanuabada a better and safer place to live by educating their fellow community members about violence against women, HIV/AIDS and other social issues that affects their community.
PSI will support the community activists throughout the project to minimise violence against women by talking to their community members about this issue and supporting survivors.
Justice, social issues coordinator of United Church, urban region office Rev Hoge Rabura also attended the training.
Rev Rabura said that there were many social issues people faced in Hanuabada.
