PEOPLE in the New Guinea Islands region have been urged to keep good quality bank notes in circulation.
A team from the Bank of Papua New Guinea was in East New Britain last week to conduct an awareness campaign on its clean bank note policy during the National Mask Festival.
It is understood the main objective of the clean bank note policy introduced in 2008 is to ensure the integrity of bank notes in circulation.
The team said the central bank wanted to maintain good quality bank notes in circulation to ensure the notes met the needs and expectations of all users.
The policy covers the appearance of bank notes, cleanliness and ease of handling to retain a high level of bank note security by ensuring the security features on the notes are durable and easy to recognise, and enhance the image and reputation of the currency.
The team said to achieve that it was important for the people to help by returning any notes that had been torn, damaged by heat, worn out, dirty and folded to any commercial bank branch and exchange for clean notes.
They urged the people not to write on bank notes, staple and punch holes on them.
The team left for Port Moresby yesterday.
