THE PNG Pepes created their slice of netball history at the Pacific Netball Series in Apia, Samoa, yesterday when they beat home side Samoa 56-48.

Skipper Winnie Mavara led a young side to a boil over victory over the highly favoured Samoans in front of  a raucous home crowd.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game but we stayed positive,” Mavara said.

PNG will need to beat the Cook Islands in order to qualify for the Commonwealth Games next year and also improve their world ranking.

In an interview yesterday, Pepes coach Annie Iamo commended the PNG girls effort that was played with “enthusiasm and guts”.

“This is the first time we’ve ever won a PNS game and I’m so proud of my girls’ efforts,” Iamo said.

“Everyone played their best and performed well in all areas.

“Our shooters, our midcourt and our defenders were spot on.

“Even our reserves on the bench were impressive.

“I’m looking forward to playing Cook Islands,” Iamo said.

The PNG girls stunned the home crowd with their outstanding performance before defeating Samoa with an eight point difference.

Samoa, who are ranked second behind Fiji in the PNS and comprising New Zealand-based players, trailed PNG at halftime 30-22.

The same starting line-up from the game against Fiji included Maleta Roberts and Tiata Baldwin at shooting, Mavara at centre, Kula Iamo at wing attack, Nerrie Adula at wing defence and Margaret Eka and Kilala Owen at goal defence. The only change made was during the third quarter when Cheryl Renagi came on for Mavara.

Iamo also praised goal-shooter Baldwin, who was the outstanding player of the match with her accuracy and calmness.

PNG Pepes now look forward to today’s final PNS game against Cook Islands at 5:15pm.

“If we all just go out on court with the same mind sets, I believe we can beat Cook Islands,” Mavara said.
