Pepes host dinner to raise funds

THE Pacific MMI PNG Pepes will be hosting a corporate dinner to raise funds to compete in the upcoming Pacific series and regional qualifiers to be held in Rarontonga, Cook Island, from June 3-5.
They are appealing to the business houses and interested stakeholders who have the heart for the sport to support the Pepes this evening at a corporate dinner at the Crowne Plaza with the tables going for K2,000.
An auction of the Pepes memorabilia, caps and polo T-shirts will be on stage during the night.
Pepes captain Mona-lisa Leka said in an e-mail yesterday that it would be an historical moment for the PNG national netball team to be competing at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, from Oct 3-14.
“Our girls have a huge task ahead in the coming event June. With the Pepes ranked 12 in the international rankings, we will be facing a much tougher opponent from the Pacific region,” she said.
First up on the list, Pepes will face-off with Cook Islands ranked seventh, Samoa ranked eighth and Melanesian rivals, Fiji, currently ranked ninth, in the Pacific series.
Leka said the Pepes were slotted in pool B with Commonwealth Games gold medallists, New Zealand (ranked second), in their first outing and England (ranked third).
She admitted that it would be a daunting task for the Pepes.
They will also meet South Africa, Cook islands and Barbados in the final surge of the pool B games, followed by the playoffs for the finals standing.
