PETE’S PUNCHLINE

Sports

  • My goodness. What in tarnations happened to the Roosters on Friday night? They didn’t just get thrashed by the Rabbitohs, they got
annihilated! What else would you call a near full strength Roosters team getting blown off the park (and into the next time zone) 60-8 by a Rabbitohs outfit that had been decent up to that game. Actually that scoreline should’ve been 70-8 had two dubious bunker/ref calls gone Souths way. The only other time I’ve felt this exhilarated was when the Rabbitohs beat the Roosters in the preliminary final back in 2014.
  • A job well done to Alex Johnston for scoring five tries. One of those tries would have to be the try of the season in my opinion. Deluxe second phase play from the Bunnies from 20m off their line all the way up the middle of the field to end with Johnston over in the corner.
  • Andrew Voss on commentary said they’d be having a public holiday on Monday in PNG because of AJ’s heroics. He was half right. It’ll be a public holiday today for Souths fans. Go on, take a break, you deserve it.
  • Finally, on that game. Several thoughts and observations went through my mind in the aftermath: firstly, the other NRL top eight sides will no longer fear the Roosters; secondly, Trent Robinson’s face was priceless (looked like a man who’d just lost everything at the races and had to go home and explain it to his wife and kids); thirdly, if God was watching that game, which I’m sure He was, I reckon He was wearing the crimson and myrtle colours; and fourthly, my kids are going to be telling their grand kids about what the Rabbitohs did Friday night.
  • The Wigmen’s quality and composure got them through to the next round of the Digicel Cup finals with a deserved win over the Enga Mioks who were doing their best impersonation of the Waghi Tumbe.
  • I wonder how many 60 plus people were allowed to go and see the Digicel Cup finals over the weekend? I’ll bet most of them were in the VIP lounge.
  • I’m going to call it now. The Lakers will win the NBA title. After beating the Nuggets 4-1, I just don’t think the Heat or the Celtics have anyone that can match LeBron and AD as a combination
  • If Benji goes to the Super League, he’ll last another five seasons there and probably win a title too.
  • A salute to former Australian batsman Dean Jones who died last Thursday from a suspected heart attack. He was one of Australia’s trailblazers in the 1980s and 90s.
  • Sorry, I can’t help it. Whenever I feel down I’ll watch a replay of the Rabbitohs-Roosters game. Go you Bunnies! – PGTP ([email protected])
