PACIFIC-in-Union ignited interest among school kids along the Aroma Coast following a successful coaching clinic at Lalaura village last Saturday.
Leading up to the Aroma Coast 7s tournament next month, the PiU programme was introduced by sevens veteran Douglas Guise with the help of Nova club players Moses Guise, Eli Kini and current Pukpuks Under-19 skipper Manu Guise, who were out on the field sharing their skills.
The programme involved two groups, aged from seven years who played tag rugby, to the 11 to 15 years who played the modified game of sevens.
They were taught ball drills, passing drills, kicking skills, rucks, line outs and scrums where they delivered well.
“I was impressed with the skill level.
“These kids showcased great skills and could pick up a drill within 20 minutes.
“It was exciting to watch them come out and have fun,” Guise said.
Lalaura Elementary School teacher Allan Rario said this was the first of its kind and he was looking forward to implementing the skills taught and seeing the talent the kids possessed at such an early age.
Guise said he would be travelling on Jan 30 to conduct similar clinics with the children and the women of Kapari and Viriolo villages.
“As an initiative of the PiU programme, a game will be played by the kids showcasing the skills they have learnt to launch the AC7s tournament,” he said
For those schools interested to be part of the PiU Rugby4Schools programme, contact PiU In-Country manager Paul Joseph on 323 4211 or 7304 4993 for more information and to register their schools.
PiU’s target is to have five new schools every term and these schools have already been identified.
