Plans in place to provide Daru with better water supply

National Planning Minister Richard Maru says that there are plans to build desalination plants in Daru to convert sea water into fresh water.
He said in addition there was a plan to drill bore holes to provide water for the town.
The current water supply system in Western involves running a pipe from the main land, which is far.
“Daru town has a big water supply issue and I have met with Water PNG and have asked them to look at a desalination plant and also drill a bore water system to access underground water sources .
“I’m hoping that in the next few weeks I will have details on what we have in plan for the Daru residents. We are working on plans to have a long-term clean and efficient water supply system in Daru.”
Maru also said that World Bank consultants had done some scoping and costing for a water project for Vanimo in West Sepik.
“I’m hoping to have the final scoping and costing of the project in June and it is our intention to built a new water supply from Vanimo and Mendi in the Southern Highlands next year.”
Maru said many towns in the country like Vanimo, Mendi, Tari (Hela) and Kurumul (Jiwaka) did not have proper water and sewerage systems.
Western Governor Taboi Awi Yoto said there had been no water supply in Daru for six months.
West Sepik Governor Tony Wowou said that they have been using the same water supply in Vanimo town since 1975.
