ROYALS Under-20 player Mangi Ango is facing Port Moresby Rugby League (PRL) sanction after assaulting referee James Kuni in his A-Grade team’s 12-14 loss to Hohola Flies on Saturday.
It is understood that both clubs will be fined and Ango banned over the assault in the preliminary final at the National Football Stadium.
Flies supporters invaded the field to celebrate the win as Royals were left dejected after surrendering a two-point lead three minutes from fulltime.
During the field invasion, Ango approached Kuni and assaulted him before Royals captain intervened to restrain the U20 player.
Supporters also approached PRL administrator Meke Maino for an explanation on a controversial Flies try but later accepted the loss.
The incident was witnessed by PRL chairman Dr James Naipao, judiciary chairman Simon Maima and administrator David Silovo. It is understood that these officials will file reports on the incident.
Royals president Brian Kombe said he was disappointed with Ango as the assault had painted a bad picture of the club.

  • Unacceptable behaviour and really damaging to rugby league and sports in general.Where is security to protect referees.Without refs team sports will not exist. We can do better.

  • So here goes the national sports of PNG, the only country in the entire world wide to call Rugby league as its national sport and has never won a world cup, and has its rugby playing field filled with rugby lunatics that have never been educated well enough past the 40 years post independence. I am not surprised nor interested.

  • Rugby league is going to next stage and I can’t understand why the upcoming players are still going reverse.

  • same mistake over and over, is their PNG Rugby judiciary to immediate action to illiterate rugby player. it is time for PNG rugby board to think critically on rugby in the international stage not in PNG context

  • It is with that type of attitude that other international sporting organization skip PNG players.
It is sad but clear ever since, PNG still has attitude problems, not all but a few will paint a bad picture which we all will suffer.
It is very unfortunate for the club too.

  • very bad reputation, they have to accept the defeat as one has to win and one has to lose. assaulting of referees and linesmen were done away some decades ago. this young man must have just popped up from somewhere without knowing the consequences of assaulting referee. PNG has now advanced from this type of attitude. let him learn his lesson.

  • I wonder has he got goals why his playing footy. Everyone is trying to bring the National Sport to the Next Level and here we see an individual painting a bad image of the sport we call our National Sport. what an embarrassment.

  • Set precedence. Such people must be banned for life. Any other individuals in the same boat should be penalized severely. Clubs too must take responsibility for their players and supporters behaviours and face similar penalties. We must all grow up and appreciate sports and results of fixtures. We’ve come a long way and we can’t allow a few bunch of lunatics drag us all down the drain.
