THE Port Moresby Cricket Association competition has provided the national men’s and women’s teams with game time as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect the international season.
Cricket Papua New Guinea cricket manager Lakani Oala said the shortened T20 season was underway at Amini Park with the competition scheduled to conclude in December.
“We will be looking to have nine weeks of competition where teams will get to play each other once in one complete round,” he told The National.
The competition has eight teams each in the men’s and women’s divisions.
“Covid-19 has played a big part in the timing of the competition,” Oala said. “But at least it’s great for clubs to play some form of cricket before the year ends.
“Another good thing is that our national representatives will get the opportunity to play competitive cricket while training.
“The men’s and women’s teams have been training over the past couple of months so it’s important that they get as much game time as possible.
“They haven’t gone out of the country in a while as international cricket has been really affected by the pandemic so this competition complements their training.
“We want our national representatives to play competitive cricket regularly while contributing to the local clubs so it’s a win-win situation for us.”
Oala said matches were being played on Saturdays and Sundays.
